Job Descriptions

Safety Check Officer (SCO) and assistant
The Safety Check tent is sometimes referred to as the RSO station. The primary Safety Check (SC) person must be a NAR/TRA L2 and will check that all rockets flown are safe and adhere to NAR and local rules. The SC will verify motor retention, nosecone/coupler fit, and weigh every rocket to verify that the installed motor will provide a safe flight. The SC will check each flight card to insure that the Range Boss and LCO will have enough information to assign a pad and fly the rocket.

The Safety Check Assistant (SCA) is not required to be NAR or TRA certified and will be limited to Low and Mid power rockets only.  The SCA should be familiar with all aspects of LPR/MPR rocketry and should be active in rocketry. The purpose of the SCA is to allow the primary SC person to focus on HPR rockets.  You must be 18 to work this position.

Launch Control Officer Assistant(LCO Assist)
Coordinates the flight cards for the LCO and files cards as rockets are flown. Communicates with the Away Cell and the HPR pad manager using radios to keep the launch running smoothly.  The LCO assistant also operates the launch controller and launches every rocket. If you wish to be an announcer for a shift sign up for this position. If you would like a shift at Announcer, please send an email to: nypower@marsclub.org

Range Boss
The Range Boss (RB) will work in conjunction with the Launch Control Officer (LCO) to control the flow of the launch.  The RB will assign pads to fliers and note those pad assignments on the flight cards. He/She will collect the flight cards and pass them to the LCO. The RB must be able to multi-task and think quickly and be efficient to make sure the launch runs smoothly.  Good communication skills are a must! The RB will be provided with a chart of what rods/rails are on which pads.

HPR Pad Managers 2 positions
Works under the direction of the LCO/ LCO Assistant to fix all rod/rail angles in directions so as to avoid flight over the crowd or towards the HAG museum. Assists fliers as necessary with pad electronics and rocket loading. The HPR Pad Manager must be willing to enforce the local launch rules with regard to rod angles. Additionally, the HPR Pad Manager will keep watch on LPR models that may be descending in the HPR pad area.

One pad manager is required at all times, two are ideal. Please fill empty slots before doubling up.

LPR Pad Manager: 1 Position
Performs a similar job as the HPR manager. The LPR manager will be more hands on because there will be younger children flying models.  Assisting them with the pads and electronics is important.  The LPR Manager will make sure all rod angles are set so models do not fly over the flight line or the HPR pad area.
