Launch Report- May 25-26

MARS had two launches in May.  The first weekend wasn't the greatest weather wise with wind on Saturday and rain on Sunday.  But what a difference a week makes. We were rewarded with great weather, temperature and sunshine.  This is why we schedule two launch weekends in May.

We had 232 flights over the 2 days.  For you statistically minded out there here is the impulse breakdown for the weekend from flights cards with motor information included.

So now the highlights..

Everybody came to fly rockets, some in total quantity of flights, some in quantity of motor impulse and others to test their experimental creations. For the sheer number of flights the ribbon goes to Ian Hughes with 17 flights recorded. Second place goes to John Osborn with 12 flights and 3rd place goes to new member Brandon Doyle with 11 flights.  Good job guys in getting all those flights in.

As far a family effort goes, first place goes to the Clunes, with 18 flights by Bill, Mary Beth, Analise, Melody and Kaitlynn. Honorable mentions goes to the Doyles, with Jillian and Brandon combining for 17 flights.

Owen Baird had 5 flights including 3 on his Mega Baron with nice E9 powered launches. His Dad got his L1 certification with a spectacular flight of is Pteradactyl Jr on a Loki H100 sparky motor. Tyler Coady had 5 flights including a nice 4 engine cluster on a Colonial Viper with an E9 surrounded by 3 C6-5's. Newly minted L1 Pat Coady had two flights including an IO on an H128.

MARS member Chris Colby from CT had 3 flights including a nice flight of his Wa!Hoo! on a CTI K570. John Derimiggio (your's truly) made some room in his motor magazine by flying 4J's and a K during the weekend including a nice flight (if I say so myself) of the Honest John on an AMW K540 Green Gorilla. An inadvertent chute at apogee made for a longish walk but I need the exercise anyhow.  Mike Derimiggio had several flights including a new Alpha on a C6-5.

Brandon Doyle had several nice flights on some very interesting custom rocket designs. His work is excellent and he has a fine future. His flight included several clusters, novel designs and rear chute deployment designs. We can't wait to see what he brings to our next launch. His sister Jillian got into the spirit with several C6 flights in several rockets. The Doyle's don't fool around!

Dewain Feller had 8 flights on his some of his beautiful fleet of rockets. Dewain is one of the clubs best modelers and his work is a pleasure to look at. This week he flew his Astron MarkII, Astron Trident, Thor, Thunderstar, Cherokee D, upscale Astron Midget and D-Region Tomahawk. Dave Holloway flew his Arapahoe E on a D12 and his handsome Bullpup on an E9 for a nice entertaining flight.

Russ Hughes comes to launches to fly. He flies big, fast and high and his flights are always exciting. Maybe too exciting.  His beautiful 6" AGM600 Pit Bull flew on a AT K550 but unfortunately did not deploy the main with his D-G tether failed to release. A little damage, but nothing that Russ cannot repair. He had nice flights on his 5.5" Skeeter on a J275 and a fast flight on his Carbon 3 on a J500.  His last flight of the weekend was an impressive 6" WAC Corporal on a KBA K750 which shook the ground.

Nat Kinsey got his L2 on his freshly rebuilt GL Talon 3 on an AT J350. He rounded out the weekend with several monocopter flights and flights of this X-Caliber and Tiny Pterdactyl.

Debra Koloms flew here Eye Roc on a Loki J320 red motor for a nice flight with a long delay. Its been a while since Debra has flown a motor smaller than an L with motor ejection no less. Tom, Brandon and Matt Koszuta combined for 12 flights. The highlight flight was Tom's Ultimage on a cluster of 5 G80's. 4 lit and 1 cato'ed. Probably as good as could be hoped for.

New member Tom Mullaney had two G77 flights on this Interceptor and G-Force. Tom hopes to cert L1 at NYPOWER.  John Osborn always has interesting and entertaining flights. His latest creation is the Oatmobile Quadramatic.  Its a variation of his flying Oat can this time with 4 releasing satellites at motor ejection.  Come to our next launch to see this.

Chris Prinzi had a slight better weekend this time than last.  His Sherri's Hot Rockets Space Shuttle and a very nice flight up, but a failed chute attachment and failed glider release ended the flight badly. Fortunately all is repairable. His SR-71 RC glider flight was successful and was a real nice flight with RC glider recovery. Finally his beautifully finished X15 flew on an AMW K-1000 Skidmark for probably the most impressive flight of the weekend.  Krista flew her Pretty in Pink rocket on a J315 (hey, was this an L2 dry run?) for a flawless flight; Chris must have been away taking pictures when this rocket was prepped.

Ken Rebescher came back for the second consecutive weekend to enjoy the better weather and come flying. He flew is G-Force on a G80 and his Minnie Magg twice on a H268 and an I600R for some fast flights.

Dave Riedel and Norm Roof came in product development mode testing their new Gamma Star RC boost glider on a sequence of engines starting with a D12 and ending with an F24.  This is going to be a killer product, a nice RC glider than can be flown on a D12 all day but able to punch it up to an F when you feel like it. It boosts nice and glides beautifully. Dave also flew some ‘regular’ rockets as well as his Delta Star glider on a G33.

Longtime MARS member and Senior Adviser Ferenc Roka added to his 4000+ flight history with several saucer and model rocket flights. New MARS member Ben Rothstein flew an Outlaw on a C6 and a Black Diamond on a 1/2A.

Daniel Sheerer from Ithaca came and flew the highest flight of the weekend. His PR G3 Powderfinger flew to over 6900’ on a AT J415. His son Dean also flew some model rockets including an Acme Spitfire on a D12.  John Shusdock had a busy weekend with over 8 nice flights of E to G powered rockets.  Al Sterner flew a new AT H250 Mohave Green load in his Sonic Challenge. He also flew his HoJo on a I161.

Jeff Taylor had 2 very nice high power flights. His ring tail flew on a J420 for an authoritative boost and his Eliminator 4 flew on a AT K185 for an impressive 7 sec boost to the bright blue sky. New MARS member Dave Tomer had 6 model rocket flights including some vintage Scout and Sprint flights. Doug and Doug Vileria (father-son team) had 9 flights and did not destroy any rockets. HopeII had 2 G-Flights and the Stovi flew 3 times on F’s. Doug had a very nice flight on his Arial on a AT H180W to about 2100’.

Michael Walsh had over 9 flights including 3 on is very nice SR-71 on C6-5’s.

Finally Lloyd Wood treated the crowd to 3 high power flights with some vintage motors older than some of the flyers at the field. His Warloc flew on an I161. Two flights on his Mini Mag were impressive on a J350 and I435.  That old I435 motor looked like it couldn’t decide whether it wanted to CATO or operate in motor mode. Welcome back Lloyd!

Next launch….NYPOWER 13! See you there.
