Rocketry in MARS

MARS members are active in many areas of the rocketry hobby. From model rockets to high-power, kits to scratch built designs and RC boost gliders to custom electronics and flight computers you will find interesting and stimulating projects at every launch.

Our focus is on education, safety and enjoyment of a unique hobby.

Model Rocketry
Today’s model rockets are constructed of lightweight materials such as cardboard, plastic and balsa wood. They are fueled by single use rocket motors manufactured by professional companies. These rockets may be flown over and over by simply replacing the used motor with a new one. They typically contain a parachute, streamer or other recovery system that allows them to land gently for later reflight.

Model rockets are safe, easy to build and relatively inexpensive to fly. With parental supervision, model rockets are an excellent vehicles to get children excited by science.

MARS can work with your school or scout troop for help in getting started.

High Power Rocketry
The major difference between model and high power rockets are propulsion power and weight. Rockets that use engines with a total impulse greater than 160 Nsec or have an average thrust greater than 80N are considered high power rockets. You must be certified by one of the three rocketry sanctioning organizations in North America, (NAR, TRA or CAR) to fly a high power rocket at a NAR or TRA sanctioned launch.

High power rockets require more preparation than launching model rockets. Not only is a larger field required, but FAA clearance must be obtained prior to the launch date. In addition, many high power rockets use electronic systems to deploy the recovery system.

MARS is ready to help if you want to progress into High Power. We have experienced members who will be generous with advice and tips. Additionally, the club has loaner motors available that you can use for your certification attempts.
